Sleep Disturbance and Learning in Childen with Benign Epilepsy of Childhood with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECCTS)
'BECCTS' is a type of epilepsy. (Named benign, as it was originally thought to have no ill-effects.) This project is a clinical trial investigating the relationship between disturbed sleep and learning difficulties in children with BECCTS. It is thought that night-time seizures may reduce the quality of children's sleep. As quality of sleep is associated with learning abilities, it is also thought that these children's seizures may intefere with their learning abilities. We are assessing a medication that reduces night-time seizures, for its effect on both sleep quality and learning ability in children with BECCTS.
This project is led by Dr Finbar O'Callaghan, and runs at centres in Bristol and Glasgow.
Epilepsy Research UK have funded this project.
