Academic & Research Activity:

  • Broad training in epidemiology via Wellcome Trust Training Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology with successful completion of MSc and PhD theses.
  • Previous positions as Developmental Epidemiologist (National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford) and Research Epidemiologist (MRC Environmental Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton)
  • Successful completion and publication of various epidemiological studies including prevalence studies, cohort studies and randomised clinical trials.
  • Grant income to date circa £1.5m.
  • Approximately 50 peer-reviewed articles, with many more published abstracts, letters and spoken presentations.
  • Jointly leading international research project in treatment of infantile epilepsy and national study of the outcome of childhood stroke
  • MacKeith Prize winner of British Paediatric Neurology Association for outstanding young researcher (2005).
  • Peer review for many journals including Lancet, BMJ, Pediatrics, Archives of Diseases in Childhood and Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
  • Director of Child Health Course at University of Bristol Medical School with responsibility for curriculum development, exams and assessments.
  • External examiner at Universities of Cambridge, Newcastle and Nottingham for research degrees (MD, PhD).
  • Founder member and Chair of British Paediatric Neurology Surveillance Unit

 

Paediatric Neurology:

  • Head of Dept., Department of Paediatric Neurology, Bristol Royal Hospital for Sick Children 2004-2008.
  • Training in Paediatric Neurology at Southampton with award of CCST in Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurology in May 2003.
  • Running Paediatric Epilepsy Training (PET) courses for fellow professionals in the South West of England.
  • Fellowship in Neonatology in University of Toronto.

 

Special interests:

Tuberous sclerosis complex, epilepsy, stroke in children, early childhood environment and future neurological performance.
